What’s Your Limiting Belief?

June 21, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

A client of mine claimed to be ‘the world’s biggest procrastinator’. Quite a mean feat bearing in mind how common it is and the population scattered around the globe. I love limiting beliefs – they are fascinating. Beliefs drive behaviour and what we do and don’t do so have a huge impact in success, action and change.

Other common limiting beliefs are; ‘self-employment will be difficult’, ‘career change is hard’, ‘marketing is pushy’, ‘all public sector workers are institutionalised’, ‘women are bad drivers’ etc..  Most of the time limiting beliefs are irrational, created on a small shred of evidence, one comment or a snippet in the media.  They are really powerful, stopping people from doing what they want or creating bias and inequality.

Limiting beliefs can be about anything; money, relationships, work etc. One client had a belief that ‘money is misery’. They wanted more of it but were stopping themselves because of their limiting belief.  Beliefs can usually be spotted by generalisation such as all… or I must/should. What are yours? Have some fun noticing people’s beliefs wherever you are reading this.  Read this bulletin on ‘Mind reading’ when we create beliefs  about other people:

She Went With A Bang

June 12, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I fainted recently and hit my head. I’m hoping it will improve me. I have been thinking a lot recently about my brain wearing out with overuse. Not wise, as it will wear out even faster. Perhaps I could buy a new one or two brains for the price of one might be an idea too; come in handy in the future as we are living longer.

I fainted because I got up too quickly. More haste less speed is a quote that was created for a reason! Doing something too quickly is easy to do because there is so much to pack in, and this is magnified by social media. Responding in an argument, eating something hot too soon after it is taken out of the oven, giving someone feedback without thinking about the best way to express it is taken out of the oven all have consequences.

Wouldn’t it be brilliant if there was software that enabled humans to defrag their brains and refresh them?  We could erase negatives memories of redundancy, critical comments, bad bosses, broken relationships and stress. I am sure it won’t be too long before that innovation happens. Being replaced by robots is next. I’m off to search Google.

Does Size Matter?

June 1, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

Size matters. Or does it? Isn’t it how you use it? I’ve been thinking about this a lot. The older I get, the bigger is my network. Throw in a dollop of Twitter followers, LinkedIn connections and Facebook ‘friends’ and the whole world could be my network. This is hugely exciting and absolutely paralysing overwhelming! I need a lie down.

That clever chap Pareto said that 80% of your problems come from 20% of people, 80% of business come from 20% of your contacts. The key is working out the 20%. If your network is increasing fast, how can you keep up with who need to be culled, which contacts need to be nurtured and which is the 20% when it changes minute my minute.

I think I shall go and live in a cave.

Does your career matter? If so, download our free report ‘Pain free career change’ and see if you need a career rethink.

Tweet Tweet!

May 19, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I did a session explaining social media recently. Here’s my layman’s explanation of how Twitter works: I follow you so you will follow me.  I thank you for following me. I retweet your tweets in the hope that you’ll retweet mine so I get more followers. I suggest my followers follow you if you support me, especially on a Friday. Still with me?

I share my miscellaneous thoughts as ‘tweets.’  These are the random thoughts occupying my headspace in the hope that you will spread them around the world virally and a celebrity will become my Twitter friend. The 140 characters tweet limit stops me from being verbose and boring the pants off you. I hope that by not selling, we will have a connection and it will lead to business, but subtly.  You can de-follow me at any time but I won’t know, so my ego is undented. Feeling fog free now about how Twitter works?

I wonder if people will start speaking in 140 character sound bites? Parents of teenagers might say that is already the case.  Could save a lot of time and increase productivity. Twitter enables you to connect with anyone, is free and if managed is a great tool and is the modern way to connect and get a job.

My Brain Is Exploding

May 16, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

My brain feels like it is either going to explode or implode. Why? Social media overload. Last week I read that half of companies have banned their employees from using Twitter. They think their employees are whiling away the hours on the company’s time leaking profit tweeting and posting on Facebook.  Maybe they are right. Are you? Managing social media is a hot topic.

Managing social media has creating new furrows in my brow, and there were too many already.  I have a love hate relationship with social media. I am a bit worried that both my head and my computer will explode as my Twitter followers grow and my Linked In connections increase. I am going to buy a mop. I love variety and new things so a messy grey matter explosion is a real possibility.  I have actually deleted some ‘friends; on Facebook to delay the explosion.  How am I going to find time to blog for you too??

I wonder if in future you will be able to book a minor operation to have some more brain megabytes added to cope with the exponential growth of social media. Managing social media is essential to stay sane. I worry about what impact social media has on communication, connection and happiness.   That topic is far too serious for a blog though.

Want To Plan Your Escape??

April 19, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I spoke to someone today who hates their job. Like many people, about 50% I’d say, they fell into their career by accident. They have 2 young children and commute 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. Not what you would call ‘quality of life’ or ‘work life balance’ or ‘job satisfaction’.

When they had decided to do something about it and end the misery, you could hear the lightness in their voice. They said having made the decision; they could feel themselves smiling more. With 20 hours on a train each week, it won’t take them long to do our career change e course and define a new career that makes them smile and fits them better.

Who does this remind you of? A friend? A family member? Maybe it’s you. End the misery and take action to plan your escape. Isn’t life too short, downturn or no downturn?

What’s Your ‘Aha Moment?’

April 13, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I love those moments when the light goes on.‘Aha’ moments as I call them. I had a client last week who had a blinding insight. I love it when that happens because it represents new clarity and the beginning of their new improved future. Seeing them go on to make it happen is the golden icing on the insight cake.

I remember well the first time I spoke with this client. They said “I’ve got a business idea in me” and in our session out it popped, like a newborn baby, which is soooo exciting. Often people are so close to themselves that they can’t see insights, or they have such busy lives , they don’t have the time and space to notice them, make sense of them and work out what to do with them.

I am a bit like a midwife of people’s insights, future careers, hopes and dreams. Love it!   Often people have intuitions and instincts about what they want but allow others, or themselves, through their fears or agendas, to sabotage them. People are really creative at stopping themselves from doing what they want!

Examined Your Navel Recently?

April 9, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I took myself on an away day this week. It was horrible. I sat in the sun in 21 degrees in a beautiful garden in the Cotswolds thinking and reflecting. The fluff is pink and green since you asked. We often don’t make time for reflection and contemplation, when it is one of those ‘important but not urgent’ tasks that make all the difference to success and happiness.

The catalyst for my reflection was a new business year. The last 12 months has been so full-on, I felt like my head was spinning off my neck at times. I had an enjoyable and productive day and did about 3 days work in 1. Next is an away day to think about all the non-work areas, but I am leaving that until the school holidays are over as one of my values is peace. Shhh!

What do you need or want to reflect about that would make all the difference to you? How to improve a relationship; how to murder your boss painlessly and without being caught; how to achieve more in less time; how to change career in a time of uncertainty?

Our bulletins might be useful for your reflection. Click on this link to read historical ones on Smart living and working; Career strategies and Self-promotion topics:

Small Things Make A Big Difference

April 3, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I am quite simple, so I like simple things. How about you? I think little things make all the difference and I love seeing the light go on with clients.  Do you ever need to do something but keep on not getting around to it?

A client needed to do his expenses, but had put the task off for 9 months. I asked him what kind of environment was conducive to doing the task enjoyably. He replied going to his local pub for a quiet pint. The next day he e mailed me to say that he had done them.

Another client claimed that she detested networking; a common phenomena. I was surprised; after all she was a people person. I explained that networking was all about connecting with people, something I knew she loved doing. “Oh, in that case, I love networking” as the penny dropped with a resounding clank as she headed off to book some networking events with a smile on her face.

What small change would make a big difference with you?

Changing your career makes a big difference to your happiness and fulfilment. Click on the link below to find out more:

Endings And Beginnings.

March 28, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

Do you find life sometimes is full of endings and beginnings at the same time?

This week an ending is that I am doing my last ‘Steer your career workshop’ to help professionals who have been made redundant. Over the last 2.5 years, we have helped over 200 professionals from diverse backgrounds to find a new direction, hope and confidence.

What have I noticed from working with them? A desire for work to have more purpose and to make a difference; wanting a better work life balance and being fed up of the corporate rat race to name a few themes.

And the beginning? It is that we have been chosen as a partner by The Telegraph for our career change e course which means we can help more people and write more too.  A while until I retire mind, since women in my family live until 98. That is a lot of care home funds to fund!
