feeling stuck

The agony of feeling trapped in the wrong career

So there you are. Feeling trapped. Feeling stuck. The agonising pain of needing a career change.

So, what do you do? Do you take action? Do you do research?

What do you do?

Is it any of these?

•You chew your pencil (there must be a few pencils still left out there in a world of tablets!)
•You bite your nails.
•You have a moan to your partner or a friend.
•You go shopping. Alot.
•You go to an expensive restaurant.
•You go to an pricey hairdresser and have a haircut and your colours done.
•You visit a Spa for a day to pamper yourself and make yourself feel better.
•Your body gets ill, waves you a ‘red flag’ and goes on strike to take you away from the office and give you some time to create the future. You sleep.
•You drink too much.
•You search for free career change resources on the web.
•You do drugs.
•You get depressed.
•You comfort eat. Multi packs are your new ‘best friend’.
•You moan to your partner or friend. Again.
•You plan a weekend away or holiday to distract yourself from how bad you feel.

And then you come back from a break and return to work and your life. Things are exactly the same. Only they aren’t. You have money on your credit card to pay off.

If you convinced yourself that you couldn’t afford to change career before, you definitely can’t now. Your mortgage is too big. Your credit card bill too large. Your tiredness and lack of energy too much to make a change.

So what do you do?

You start planning your next holiday to escape from your life and your job. A temporary refuge from the agony of being stuck in the wrong career. And feeling it is too late to do anything about it. It isn’t.

Feeling Stuck?

I was scanning the best sellers list in a book shop over Easter and noticed 2 books in the top 15 about being stuck and what to do about it. The phrase feeling stuck appears 36 million times in Google search.

Feeling stuck is not something people talk about, is it? Especially the government or CEO of a company. It is a fascinating topic affecting many areas, relationships, career, projects etc.

Often feeling stuck is caused by something we are not even aware of, e.g. resistance caused by a fear so it is hard to put your finger on it and do something about it. Try saying that to your boss when you are procrastinating.

With so much uncertainty about, one of the worst things to do when feeling stuck is stick your head in the sand and hope it will go away. Occasionally around the corner, there is a magic solution and it is best to take no action, but this is rare.

Here are 3 tips to help you become unstuck:

  1. Have a ‘stuckness audit’ with yourself, for a project or your company to identify the ‘don’t knows’
  2. Identify the consequence of staying stuck and taking no action and the benefit of taking action
  3. Check in with yourself regularly and make time to ask yourself a self-reflective question e.g. What’s the resistance about?

Stuck In A Career Rut?

Feeling stuck in a career rut is common. When facing a big life changing decision or uncertain change, people can feel stuck in a career rut. Being made redundant with no obvious way forward  can make you feel very stuck. The feeling can be very dehabilitating – paralysing.

The good news is that being stuck in a career rut can be tackled, but it is hard to do by yourself as you are too close to yourself.

I find that when I’m feeling stuck and not taking action, there’s always a good reason. It’s just a question of working out what the reason is. And asking a question is a good way to pinpoint the reason. Here are 12 tips to help you when you feel stuck: 

12 simple tips to help address stuckness

1) Do tasks one at a time and clear away everything else from your desk and mind

2) Write tasks very clearly and specifically so you are left in no doubt about what you need to do

3) Keeping your final outcome in mind, identify the first step. Don’t worry about the 9th or 10th step until you’ve taken the first

4) Create a 1 page plan for projects especially a big project like a new career

5) Segment tasks to make them feel clearer and help you prioritise

6) Have a ‘stuckness audit’ with yourself, for a project or your company to identify the ‘don’t knows’

7) Identify the consequence of the stuckness and the benefits of taking action

8) Check in with yourself regularly and make time to ask yourself a self-reflective question

9) Get a career coach or mentor to help you see the wood for the trees. If you are standing in the middle of the trees, it is understandably hard to see the path out into the clearing.  

10) Speak the truth. Express what you see, feel or hear when you notice stuckness. Simply articulating it can help shift it

11) Acknowledge that stuckness and inaction is okay sometimes and it isn’t normal or realistic to have growth spurts all the time, otherwise it would be Spring all year round!

12) Think of someone who you admire. Look at the problem through their eyes. What would they do?
