Is Your Work Working For You?

February 7, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

Research shows that between 30 and 45% of people want to change job. That is a hell of a lot of people not enjoying their work and feeling unfulfilled. Many of us fell into it by chance. Did you?

I have people contacting me who have been working for 7-10 years who have never found their work fulfilling. That is a lot of hours clocked up of misery. Often in that time they have cheered themselves up by shopping, taking weekend breaks and holidays as well as the cheaper frequent comforters of food, alcoholic and drugs.

In the time and for the money they have spent soothing themselves, they could have retrained and changed their career. Blocks to action can be confidence, circumstances e.g. needing flexibility with a young child or knowing they won’t get as a good a package elsewhere. With retirement getting later and later as we will be living longer, isn’t now the time to start the ball rolling? Otherwise the ball and chain remains – a heavy weight.

Want To Keep That Holiday Feeling?

September 6, 2010 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

Where did August go?! Welcome to September – kids are back to school and you are back to work and my blog had a 2 week holiday too, so is refreshed with new words. How can you keep that holiday feeling?

My lovely cat Thelma has been staring at an ant on the kitchen floor for the last 15 minutes, absolutely enrapt in the moment. “So what” I hear you cry, what’s so interesting about THAT INANE DETAIL to blog about it, for goodness sake, don’t you know how BUSY I AM going through all my e mails?!

Well, Thelma isn’t living in the past or worrying about the yet to be revealed future, which she can’t change, she’s just enjoying being in the moment. Being in the moment is where happiness happens. When I stop being busy and focus on the here and now, it is a simply wonderful place. Time slows down, I feel carefree and it’s rather blissful. It’s easy in principle and very hard in practice because we have so much to do and it’s very easy not to.

Ok, so how do you do it? Kids and animals are great at it, so copying them helps. Stopping and becoming more aware of what your senses are noticing helps, instead of being on rush autopilot command control. Want to read more? Eckhart Tolle “Practicing the power of now“  is a great book.

Spider Stops House Move

July 29, 2010 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

A spider has been stopping my sister from moving house. Actually that’s not true. Spiders.  The shed at the bottom of her garden is looking a bit of a mess, so I asked her why she hadn’t cleared it out. She replied that her car’s not big enough to fit the things in and she needed to get someone with a big car to help her. Well I’ll help you, I replied. No! she retorted The real block turned out to be the prospect of her facing the spiders. I had many a fun time chasing her as a child with a spider encased in my hand, to the backdrop of her screams.

Why am I telling you this story? It’s because the things that stop us from doing what we want or need to are not always obvious, they can be hidden. That’s one of the reasons why procrastination happens. Blocks can be conscious or unconscious and the bigger the task or change e.g. career change, the more the blocks can get in the way and so we keep on stopping ourselves and then get frustrated when we don’t make progress.

I had a block about becoming successful because I thought I’d become busy and get stressed, which I didn’t want to be. We can keep at bay things we want without realising WE are the root cause! What do you want to change and how are you stopping yourself?

Why People Are Like Vegetables

July 8, 2010 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I am heading to my allotment to water it with no prospect of rain in sight,  and am pondering the thought that people are like vegetables. They need watering. Different people need to be watered in different ways as they have different values, needs and motivations. If only we came with an instruction manual, like a car or washing machine, it would be a lot easier.

Put it other way, we all need ‘strokes’, but how often do we get them at work? Not enough. Some employees like to have a quiet ‘thank you’ as recognition and others want a cheering crowd and a big prize. For many employees, like the lack of rain, there’s no pay rise in sight and the prospect of a pension drought too, so watering is even more important, especially as less people are doing more work.

Watering your people is crucial for employee engagement and motivation, which directly impacts on business performance, productivity and profit. What watering are you going to do today?

Exponential Delays And I’m Not Talking Trains

June 29, 2010 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I read somewhere once that things take on average 42% longer than you think they will. Increase the number of people involved in a project, and a dollop of post credit crunch risk aversion, and it’s probably more like 85%

I hate writing proposals so having given birth to one, feel very chuffed and want an instant response as reward. Months go by with such proposals floating wherever they reside. Frustrated by now, I put myself in my prospect’s shoes and think – very busy and stressed, doing 3 people’s jobs, make them smile. So I send them some tick boxes and an RSVP.

All our budgets have been cut. All I have left will pay for a packet of Post It notes, one purple magic marker pen with sparkly ink and a college student from Outer Mongolia

My feet haven’t touched the ground in weeks, I feel like a human helicopter. Bear with me, I will be in touch

I have spontaneously combusted and no longer exist

Project? What project?

Any new ideas for my list?

Also, anyone out there happy to give me some interesting work without a proposal and with an instant decision!? Can’t wait!

Do you feel too small to be effective? Mosquitos aren’t.

June 28, 2010 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I love this quote:

“Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference has never tried to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room. “

Christie Todd Whitman

Sometimes it can feel difficult doing everything yourself being a small business, especially compared with big corporates. There’s no IT department to phone, you’re head of new business, marketing, accounts, office management and client servicing. And then there’s doing the work!  Last night there was a mosquito in my bedroom and I couldn’t see it before I turned off the light. I could hear it though!

This quote:

“Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference has never tried to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room. “ Christie Todd Whitman

inspires me keeps me going on difficult days!  Today the sun is shining, even if England’s World Cup football is over.

More and more of my clients want to make a difference, do you? If so, let’s have a chat. This client of mine Duncan Goose has made a huge difference. I helped him to escape from a job he hated and work out what he really wanted to do : http://www.onedifference.org/water

Off to buy some fly spray………..

Have a good day.
