How important is career fulfilment at work?

December 9, 2020 By //  by Rachel Brushfield

2020 has been a strange year.

Covid-19 has made it so.

Lockdown has given many people more time to think than usual as well as a different way of working.

No commuting.

No face to face meetings.

Working from home.

More time to think about their career and whether it is giving them what they really want.

Whether they have career fulfilment and a decent work life balance usually.

Many people have been thinking about whether they want to go back to the old ‘normal’.

Do you?

Lots of articles in the media about ‘hybrid’ working – a combination of working from home and going to the office.

So how important is career fulfilment at work?

Below are some self-reflective questions for you to ponder.

Not all people have enjoyed a good work life balance during 2020.

Working mums home schooling have had a tough time juggling everything.

Poor career fulfilment is a common catalyst for people to seek a career change.

Ask yourself these questions to reflect upon your own career fulfillment.

7 questions – purposeful reflection about your career fulfilment.

  1. How fulfilled am I at work at the current time?
  2. How can I increase my own career fulfillment?
  3. What most motivates me at work?
  4. What most demotivates me at work?
  5. What have been my most fulfilling career highlights to date and how can I replicate them?
  6. What or who is most causing my dissatisfaction at work?
  7. What, in my view, is the number 1 factor causing disengagement in my employer?

Are you at a career crossroads?

Why not:

a) Put an Energise career coaching gift voucher on your Christmas ‘wish list’?

Working Mums Job Satisfaction?

November 14, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I have noticed a trend emerging in the ether in the last few weeks. It has been simmering in the background for a while, but its temperature is definitely hotting up. The theme is paradoxical, because the ‘fixed grin, thank goodness I have a job’ has been nudging the ‘I want job satisfaction and to feel engaged at work’ off the top slot, so there is likely to be a trend that is a bit hidden at the moment. I have noticed the trend to be especially prevalent amongst working Mums.

If they are doing grunt work or where they get treated like second class citizens, the wrench of being away from their kids is magnified.

After all, if you are going to have to fork out not insignificant sums of money to pay for an au pair, nanny or nursery, you at least want to feel that the sacrifice is worth it, and work is rewarding, and for many it seems it isn’t and maybe never has been.

There is such a huge waste of female talent amongst working mothers. Why don’t employers do more about flexibility?

Could working mums be the key to keeping the ‘fixed grin’ brigade happy through these challenging years, with the very resilience and patience that their dual role gives, an asset to share in the Boardroom? What is your view?

Did you know we do gift vouchers? They make a great practical and thoughtful Christmas present or leaving gift. E mail me for info rachel@liberateyourtalent.com

Is Your Work Working For You?

February 7, 2011 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

Research shows that between 30 and 45% of people want to change job. That is a hell of a lot of people not enjoying their work and feeling unfulfilled. Many of us fell into it by chance. Did you?

I have people contacting me who have been working for 7-10 years who have never found their work fulfilling. That is a lot of hours clocked up of misery. Often in that time they have cheered themselves up by shopping, taking weekend breaks and holidays as well as the cheaper frequent comforters of food, alcoholic and drugs.

In the time and for the money they have spent soothing themselves, they could have retrained and changed their career. Blocks to action can be confidence, circumstances e.g. needing flexibility with a young child or knowing they won’t get as a good a package elsewhere. With retirement getting later and later as we will be living longer, isn’t now the time to start the ball rolling? Otherwise the ball and chain remains – a heavy weight.
