A ‘waste of time’ is in the eye of the beholder

November 22, 2014 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

Woman juggling clocks

What is ‘a waste of time’ and who decides?

I went to an interesting workshop this week about ‘achieving more for less.’ A catchy phrase for efficiency and effectiveness and how to waste less time. Big trend that one in business as I am sure you have noticed, and sometimes a short term myopic one.

As someone who works pretty expediently thanks to a super organised family gene, a portfolio career + Stephen Covey’s book ‘The 7 habits of highly effective people’ being the closest I get to a bible, I was very hungry to gobble up more tips.

I remember having a battle with a home/office organiser who I commissioned to ‘sort me out’ when I moved from London to Oxfordshire 7 years ago. Apparently unbeknown to me, I had a very ‘creative’ filing system = new insight!

Super office organiser tried to browbeat me into having a big household bin near to the back door so I wouldn’t have far to take it to the dustbin and not empty it very often. No. No no no. I dug my heels in and we had a standoff.

I was really frustrated that she didn’t take time to ask me questions and understand my needs but instead imposed her map of the bin and rubbish emptying world onto me. I explained that I preferred a smaller bin that was emptied more often located further away from the back door so that:

a) I didn’t trip over it and end up in A&E
b) It was less likely to smell as it was emptied more often
c) I had more trips to the dustbin = exercise & escaping from my PC.

She acquiesced. I was the client after all.

So ‘a waste of time’ IS in the eye of the beholder and stakeholder. The currencies of ‘waste’ are diverse aren’t they? Money, time, energy, sleep, thinking, relaxation, chat, rubbish et al.

A lot of other things have benefits when another person e.g. your boss might perceive it as ‘a waste of time’. My afternoon naps aren’t a waste of time; they make me more productive afterwards.

Creatives need space, percolation and varied stimulus to spark off an award winning idea. Others observing them might think they are doing nothing but a lot of chewing pencils, staring into space and drinking wine and coffee.

I spend a lot of time thinking, reading & writing sitting on trains = very productive. E.g. I chose to go to St Austell recently for its 11 hour return journey for thinking and planning and to hit some key deadlines.

So what time are you wasting or is it just how you or others are perceiving it?
What 1 change would make all the difference for you?

One change I am going to make following the workshop is halving the amount of reading I optimistically take to London, fail to read and lug around before bringing it back. But then again, maybe I won’t because it’s an alternative to weights in the gym.

So what is the moral of this story and is there one? I guess it goes back to good old marketing principles – find out your client’s needs and don’t make assumptions.

If you would like a free copy of:

‘How to do absolutely nothing’ (which I might re-name)
‘Addiction to busyness’
‘The danger of making assumptions’

Are You Sleeping On The Job?

August 3, 2010 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

Apparently 3 out of 4 workers get less than the recommended eight hours of sleep a night, with worries about job security being a factor (Source Travelodge research). If I was an inventor, I would invent an off button or dimmer switch for the brain.

Civil servants get just under 6 hours a night, which is less than bankers and factory workers came in third. As someone who spent a couple of days as part of my university placement working on a production line injecting gelatine into pork pies, I can say that I used to snooze on the job hypnotised, as the work was quite repetitive.  I’d imagine that farmers were too busy to fill in the questionnaire as they were harvesting and creatives didn’t sleep at all as they were too busy working on a pitch.

In Buenos Aires, there is a dedicated sleep centre offering clients a choice of soothing colours, aromas and music and they claim that a siesta helps beat work related stress. As someone who naturally wakes at 5 and has been having an afternoon snooze since I was about 15, I agree with them!  Open plan office, no thanks!

Tip – before you go to sleep, think of an open incisive question to help your unconscious mind solve a challenge you have been grappling with.

Cabin Fever And How To Cure It

June 30, 2010 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

Do you find that there are certain tasks that you can procrastinate for England about rather than do? Would you rather pluck your nasal hair than do them? I am pretty decisive by nature, but there are a couple that get me dusting my light bulbs to avoid.

For me these are making prospect phone calls and creating proposals. I used to be a brand strategist in the communications industry who was kept in a darkened room and wheeled out for meetings to spout insights that would help the clients make more money. I am happy as Larry doing research and writing, but that other stuff, well I have to create the right conditions to get them done.

If you see a woman aged about 45 sitting hunched over a hot laptop on a long train route, think Stornaway to Penzance, or in a coffee shop long after the drink dregs have gone cold making prospect calls, that’ll be me. If I stayed at my home office, not only would I get severe cabin fever and start climbing the walls, these tasks would take ten times as long. What are your most creative avoidance strategies and least favourite tasks? Off to London to get on that yellow tube line.

Exponential Delays And I’m Not Talking Trains

June 29, 2010 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I read somewhere once that things take on average 42% longer than you think they will. Increase the number of people involved in a project, and a dollop of post credit crunch risk aversion, and it’s probably more like 85%

I hate writing proposals so having given birth to one, feel very chuffed and want an instant response as reward. Months go by with such proposals floating wherever they reside. Frustrated by now, I put myself in my prospect’s shoes and think – very busy and stressed, doing 3 people’s jobs, make them smile. So I send them some tick boxes and an RSVP.

All our budgets have been cut. All I have left will pay for a packet of Post It notes, one purple magic marker pen with sparkly ink and a college student from Outer Mongolia

My feet haven’t touched the ground in weeks, I feel like a human helicopter. Bear with me, I will be in touch

I have spontaneously combusted and no longer exist

Project? What project?

Any new ideas for my list?

Also, anyone out there happy to give me some interesting work without a proposal and with an instant decision!? Can’t wait!

Do you feel too small to be effective? Mosquitos aren’t.

June 28, 2010 By //  by DigitalJenIPC

I love this quote:

“Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference has never tried to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room. “

Christie Todd Whitman

Sometimes it can feel difficult doing everything yourself being a small business, especially compared with big corporates. There’s no IT department to phone, you’re head of new business, marketing, accounts, office management and client servicing. And then there’s doing the work!  Last night there was a mosquito in my bedroom and I couldn’t see it before I turned off the light. I could hear it though!

This quote:

“Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference has never tried to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room. “ Christie Todd Whitman

inspires me keeps me going on difficult days!  Today the sun is shining, even if England’s World Cup football is over.

More and more of my clients want to make a difference, do you? If so, let’s have a chat. This client of mine Duncan Goose has made a huge difference. I helped him to escape from a job he hated and work out what he really wanted to do : http://www.onedifference.org/water

Off to buy some fly spray………..

Have a good day.
